See, Your King Comes to You (Zechariah 9:9-17)

a Hymn for the Fourth Week of Advent
words: Gary Hicks, copyright 2010 Gary L. Hicks
tune: “French Carol” (Sing We Now of Christmas)

See, your king comes to you, righteous are His ways
Riding on a donkey, bring Him grateful praise.
How can this be? Such humble pedigree
Yet He reigns victorious, king from sea to sea.

He will stop the warhorse, break the battle bow
Hear His proclamation: peace and justice grow
Prisoners go free, the enemy must flee
Hear the sounding trumpet, voice of Jubilee.

God will save His people on that fearsome day
Like a shepherd lead us in His perfect way
Jewels in His hand, we sparkle in His land
Beautiful before Him, spotless we will stand!

Lament (Psalm 44)

Sitting round the night fire
Grand-dad told the stories
Tales of olden days
battles won
enemies undone
Deliverance!

We weren’t the strongest
richest
most cunning
But we had You!
Mighty One...
Ruler of all...
We had Your power
You loved us!
Light from Your face
blinded them
And we won!
not by swords
not by bows
but by Your favour.

So we recall those olden days
We praise and worship You.

But what about today?
What about today???
What a mess!
dishonoured
retreating
plundered
butchered
scattered
mocked
humiliated
shamed
Where are You now?

I didn’t think
we’d violated Your Covenant.
Have we turned away?
Have our hearts strayed?

Wake up, Lord!
Rise up! Help us!
Show us
Your unfailing love
Please!
Please!!!

One Fresh and Holy Shoot (Jeremiah 33:15)

“A fresh and true shoot sprouting from the David-tree” (The Message)
words: Gary Hicks, copyright 2010 Gary L. Hicks
tune: “Italian Hymn” by Felice de Giardini, 1769
(Come Thou Almighty King)

One fresh and holy shoot
Sprouting from David’s tree
One righteous Branch
Ruling His people well
Judah and Israel
His gracious tidings tell
To all the world!

Yahweh our Righteousness
Comes to redeem and bless
God in our flesh
Born in obscurity
Such insecurity!
How can He ever be
Israel’s king?

Lord God who sets things right
Maker of day and night
Dying our death
Rising in victory
Setting the captives free
Praise through eternity
Jesus the Lord.

Why, My Soul, Are You So Downcast? (Psalm 43)

words: Gary Hicks, copyright 2010 Gary L. Hicks
tune: Swedish folk melody "Tryggare Kan Ingen Vara"
("Children of the Heavenly Father")

Why, my soul, are you so downcast,
So disturbed and sad within me?
Put your hope in God our Saviour
He is worthy of our praises.

You are God, my rugged stronghold
My defense and my deliverer
Rescue me, O faithful Saviour
Vindicate me, O my Father!

Send Your light and hope to lead me,
Bring me to Your holy mountain
How I long to know Your presence,
Feel Your glory all around me.

Now I come to You, my Saviour,
My delight and joy forever
With my whole heart I sing praises
All my crowns I cast before You.

Bethlehem, Bethlehem, Though You Are Small (Micah 5:2)

words & music by Gary Hicks (11.29.10)
copyright 2010 by Gary L. Hicks
(written music available on request)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah,
though you are small among the clans of Judah,
out of you will come for me
one who will be ruler over Israel,
whose origins are from of old,
   from ancient times.”
 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Bethlehem, Bethlehem, though you are small
From your cold crèche comes the Saviour of all
Though you are humble and hidden away
Mary’s son Jesus lies nestled in hay.

There lie the shepherds on your lonely hill
Waiting for daybreak, all silent and still
Suddenly, suddenly, thunder and light
Angels unnumbered sing forth in the night.

There in your stable, the one from of old
Sleeping contentedly, safe from the cold
None but the shepherds to welcome this guest
No great parade for the purest and best.

There in your hidden place, God became man
Helpless and needy, as heaven had planned
Grace and compassion, and love without end
He is our Saviour, the world’s greatest friend.

Now is the Dawning (Isaiah 9:1-7)

tune: “Bunessan” (Morning Has Broken)

Now is the dawning, now is the daybreak
Light is advancing, gloom slips away
Once we were humbled, now comes the glory
All we had longed for: welcome the Day!

Born is a baby destined to save us
Mighty His kingdom, wondrous His power
Joy for our sadness, peace for the nations
Now is the moment, this is His hour!

We will rejoice and welcome the morning,
Freed from our shackles, lifting our hands
Now is deliverance from the oppressor
Sing to the Savior, join in the dance.

Great are His names and great is His kingdom
Righteous His rule and peaceful His ways
He is exalted, reigning forever
Bring Him allegiance, worship and praise!

New Hymnbook Coming Soon

For several months now,
my early morning hours have been taken up
with the writing of hymns and songs.
I have more than 100 of these.
Now it’s time to get them written out in good notation
            and distributed.

So I’m making a brief change in my morning routine
to gather the music into a hymnbook.
This will be a simple three-ring binder
of 50 to 100 hymns and songs.
It may take several weeks,
and I’ll try to keep you updated
                        on the process here.

When completed,
the hymnbook will be available to you at no cost.
Thanks for your interest!

Ever-Present Help (Psalm 46) Final Version

words: Gary Hicks (10.12.10)
music: blues-based riff
(copyright 2010 by Gary L. Hicks)

God is our refuge, God is our strength
He is our light, and He knows the way
He’s an ever-present help, An ever-present help
Since He is with us, we will not fear
He is our Hope, and He’s ever near
He’s an ever-present help, An ever-present help
Our God is an ever-present help in trouble.

There is a river, there is a stream
Gladdens the city where Christ is King
He’s an ever-present help, An ever-present help
God is within us, God is our Stay
He is our Help at the break of day
He’s an ever-present help, An ever-present help
Our God is an ever-present help in trouble.

Nations are raging, kingdoms will fall
He lifts His voice, He is over all
He’s an ever-present help, An ever-present help
Be still and know that He is God
Worship with reverence, worship with awe
He’s an ever-present help, An ever-present help
Our God is an ever-present help in trouble.

Ever-Present Help in Trouble (Psalm 46)

This blues-based song is still a work in progress.
I’m looking for a bridge to add some contrast
     to the simple, repetitive verses.

God is our refuge, God is our strength
He is our light, and He knows the way
He is an ever-present help in trouble.
He is an ever-present help in trouble.

Since He is with us, we will not fear
He is our Trust, and He’s ever near
He is an ever-present help in trouble.
He is an ever-present help in trouble.

There is a river, there is a stream
Gladdens the city where Christ is King
He is an ever-present help in trouble.
He is an ever-present help in trouble.

God is within us, God is our Stay
He is our Help at the break of day
He is an ever-present help in trouble.
He is an ever-present help in trouble.

My Soul Longs for You (Psalm 42)

words & music by Gary Hicks (10.11.10)
copyright 2010, Gary L. Hicks

As the deer pants for water, so my soul longs for You
My soul longs for You.
There’s a thirst deep within me, only You can satisfy
My soul longs for You.

FOR YOU, LORD, FOR YOU, I'M THIRSTY FOR YOU
FOR YOU, LORD, FOR YOU, MY SOUL LONGS FOR YOU

In the roar of the waterfall my soul cries out
As deep calls to deep.
All Your waves and Your breakers have swept over me
As deep calls to deep.

These things I remember as I pour out my soul
I pour out my soul
The songs of thanksgiving and the shouts of joy
I pour out my soul.

Though my spirit is downcast, I will hope in You
My hope is in You
For yet  I will praise You, my Saviour, my God
My hope is in You

I Was Waiting Patiently (Psalm 40)

words: Gary Hicks (10.8.2010)
copyright 2010, Gary L. Hicks
tune: “I’s the B’y”, Newfoundland folksong

I was waiting patiently for the Lord to help me
Finally He turned to me and heard my cry for mercy

LA, LA, LA, LA, LA, LA, LA,
JOYFULLY WE’RE SINGING.
LA, LA, LA, LA, LA, LA, LA,
GRATEFUL PRAISES BRINGING.

I will sing a song of joy given by the Saviour
He has made my heart to sing by His gracious favour

Many now will see and hear, though they struggled under,
Many now will trust in God, filled with awe and wonder

Praise the God who lifted me from the slimy rubble
Praise the Lord who rescued me in my time of trouble

Vision clear and purpose strong, Now my heart is ready
Now I walk the solid ground, now my feet are steady

Trust In the Lord With All Your Might (Psalm 37)

words: Gary Hicks (10.6.10)
copyright 2010 by Gary L. Hicks
tune: “O Waly Waly” (traditional English folk tune)

Trust in the Lord with all your might
Do all the good that you can do
Delight in Him, enjoy His love
For He has given all to you.

Commit your pathway unto Him
And give to Him your all, your best
For He will help in time of need
He is our strength, our sabbath rest.

Be still and wait, let patience grow
The Lord will act in perfect time
Let go of anger, never fret
His ways are wise, His thoughts sublime.

Trust in the Lord with all your might
Do all the good that you can do
Delight in Him, enjoy His love
For He has given all to you.

Lord, Your Love Reaches to the Heavens (Psalm 36)

words: Gary Hicks (10.04.10)
copyright 2010 by Gary L. Hicks
tune: traditional French
“Bring the Torch, Jeannette, Isabella”

Lord, Your love reaches to the heavens,
Lord, Your faithfulness to the skies
Righteousness like mighty mountains
Justice like ocean depths surround us,
Ah, Ah, unfailing love so precious
Ah, Ah, unfailing love so kind.

Sin will whisper to the wicked
Deep within their blinded hearts
They refuse to act with wisdom
They will not turn from evil pathways
Ah, Ah, plotting to trap the righteous
Ah, Ah, plotting to trap us all.

Lord, You care for Your creation
We are sheltered under Your wings
We will feed from Your abundance
Drink from Your river so delightful
Ah, Ah, You are the fount of mercy
Ah, Ah, You are the fount of life!

Lord, Your love reaches to the heavens,
Lord, Your faithfulness to the skies
Righteousness like mighty mountains
Justice like ocean depths surround us,
Ah, Ah, unfailing love so precious
Ah, Ah, unfailing love so kind.

Chorus: Taste and see that the Lord is good

Those who fear Him will lack no good thing
Fear the Lord, you His godly ones
Rest in the promise of His Son.

2. I will praise Him at all times
I will constantly speak His praises
I will praise Him at all times.
I will boast in this Friend of mine!

3. Glorify the Lord with me
Let us exalt His name together
Glorify the Lord with me
Honor the Kinsman who sets us free.

Now Let the Godly Sing for Joy (Psalm 33)

words: Gary Hicks (10.03.2010)
copyright 2010 by Gary L. Hicks
tune: "Ellacombe"
from "Gesangbuch der H W k Hofcapelle" 1784
“I Sing the Mighty Power of God”

Now let the godly sing for joy
And bring their rightful praise
His word holds true in every storm
We trust His faithful ways
Sing melodies and harmonies
A new song in the air
Play skillfully, with all your might
And praise Him everywhere.

Now let us stand in awe of Him
All creatures, fear the Lord,
The Maker of the universe
By His creative word.
He spoke, and all the stars were born
Each galaxy above
And every creature great and small –
In Him we live and move.

In grace He watches over us,
And helps us every day
He made our hearts, our lives, our minds
He understands our way.
What joy there is for those who trust,
Who faithfully pursue
In arms of love He carries us
Until the storm is through.

We put our hope in Christ the Lord
Our help, our strength, our shield
Our weary hearts in Him rejoice
Our hopes and fears we yield
Unfailing love surrounds us here
We trust in You alone
And from our lips sweet songs of joy
Rise up before Your throne.

He Knows the Plans He Has for Me (Jeremiah 29:11-14)

words: Gary Hicks (9.30.2010), copyright 2010, Gary L. Hicks
tune: Wexford Carol, traditional Irish tune

He knows the plans He has for me
Beyond what I can clearly see
Good plans to prosper and to bless
To raise me up and give success
He will not harm me, I am sure
In Him I trust, and stand secure
He gives me hope for future days
I will adore, and give Him praise.

With all my heart I’ll seek His face
His hopeful plans for me embrace
With grateful heart I say “Amen!”
And lift my hands in praise again.
His promise stands for all who come
He calms our fears and leads us home
He is our Promise and our stay
So let us follow and obey.

He knows the plans He has for me
Beyond what I can clearly see
Good plans to prosper and to bless
To raise me up and give success
He will not harm me, I am sure
In Him I trust, and stand secure
He gives me hope for future days
I will adore, and give Him praise.

Mighty Rock (Psalm 31)

words: Gary Hicks, copyright 2010 Gary L. Hicks
tune: “Harper Memorial” by George C. Hugg
“No, Not One”

You are our rock and the ancient fortress
Help us, Lord, Help us, Lord
Ever a stronghold and refuge for us
Help us, Lord, Help us, Lord

YOU ALONE ARE THE ROCK OF REFUGE
YOU ALONE ARE THE MIGHTY ROCK
YOU ARE OUR HOPE IN THE TIME OF TROUBLE
HELP US, LORD, HELP US, LORD

Tears blur my eyes, I am full of sadness
Help me, Lord, Help me, Lord
You are the Giver of life and gladness
Help me, Lord, Help me, Lord.

YOU ALONE ARE THE ROCK OF REFUGE
YOU ALONE ARE THE MIGHTY ROCK
YOU ARE OUR HOPE IN THE TIME OF TROUBLE
HELP US, LORD, HELP US, LORD

He sets my feet in a place of safety
Give Him praise, Give Him praise
Unfailing love, and He leads me safely
Give Him praise, Give Him praise

PRAISE THE GOD WHO HAS SHOWN US MERCY
PRAISE THE ROCK WHO HAS SHOWN US GRACE
VAST IS THE STORE OF OUR FATHER’S GOODNESS
GIVE HIM PRAISE, GIVE HIM PRAISE!

When You Hid Your Face (Psalm 30)

American blues
words and music by Gary Hicks (9.23.2010)
copyright 2010, Gary L. Hicks

When You hid Your face / I was so dismayed
When You hid Your face / I was so dismayed
I cried, O Lord, won’t You be my help
Have mercy on me, I can’t help myself
When You hid Your face / I was so dismayed

Well, Your anger lasts / just a little while
Well, Your anger lasts / just a little while
I’m cryin', “Lord, won’t You be my help?
Have mercy on me, I can’t help myself”
Well, Your anger lasts / just a little while

But Your favor lasts / for my whole life long
Well, Your favor lasts / for my whole life long
My weepin’ and wailin’ may last all night
But rejoicing will come with the mornin’ light
‘Cause Your favor lasts / for my whole life long

(instrumental)

I will not be silent – I will sing for joy
I will not be silent – I will sing for joy
He turned my wailin’ to a joyful dance
Took off my old sack and got some happy pants
I will not be silent – I will sing for joy

I will praise the Lord / for He lifted me
I will praise the Lord / for He lifted me
He healed my body, brought me up from the grave
Oh, He’s strong to heal, and He’s mighty to save
I will praise You Lord / for You lifted me

(instrumental)

Diane's Psalm

My friend Diane Walker sent me this thoughtful,
        reflective, original psalm. Thanks Diane!

Lord, you created me for this time and place,
my very being is treasured by you.
My soul wells up with hallelujahs!

You’ve gifted me to serve your Kingdom
            revealed to fulfill your purpose.
My soul wells up with hallelujahs!

You’ve showered me with blessings,
            in marriage, motherhood, and friends.
My soul wells up with hallelujahs!

Christ suffered so I might enter eternity,
your holy son for this sinful woman.
My soul wells up with hallelujahs!

Your Spirit interceded my sinful thoughts,
            forgiveness washed me clean.
My soul wells up with hallelujahs!

Your Word made known brought hope and direction,
an illumination of past, present, future.
My soul wells up with hallelujahs!

With thanksgiving and praise,
            I look forward.

Ascribe to God, O Mighty Ones (Psalm 29)

words: Gary Hicks (9.21.2010), copyright 2010 Gary L. Hicks
tune: “Resignation” USA folk melody, Walker’s “Southern Harmony”
“When God Restored Our Common Life” The Faith We Sing, #2182

Ascribe to God, O mighty ones, all glory and all strength
And give to Him, you heavenly hosts, the glory due His name
The splendor of His holiness compels His saints to come
All angels and all humans bow before His holy throne.

His voice is on the waters and He thunders on the sea
So resonant His mighty voice, so full of majesty
He breaks the lofty cedars with a flash across the sky
He strips the leafy forests bare, and “Glory!” is our cry.

He sits, enthroned, above the flood, forever King and Lord
He gives His people strength and love; we worship and adore.
The blessings of the universe He showers upon our head
Such tender mercies given us, the life and love we need.

Let angels wonder and adore, his servants, great and strong
And “Holy! Holy! Holy!” cry around the heavenly throne
We sing sweet songs of praise and love, we offer up our lives
Each thought , each word, each daily deed, a living sacrifice.
