Spirit of God, My Soul Needs Reviving

1) Spirit of God, my soul needs reviving
My mind needs renewing, fill me again
Spirit of Christ, my love needs restoring
My life needs reordering, fill me again.
Come Holy Spirit, Giver of grace
Lord, I surrender, Come take Your place
Spirit of Christ, my love needs restoring
Rule in my heart forever!

(Verse 2 suggested by Betty MacPherson Johnson)

2) Spirit of God, our souls needs reviving
Our minds need renewing, fill us again
Spirit of Christ, our love needs restoring
Our lives needs reordering, fill us again.
Come Holy Spirit, Giver of grace
Lord, we surrender, Come take Your place
Spirit of Christ, our love needs restoring
Rule in our hearts forever!

First Place

First place
That’s what You deserve
Wounded for my sins
Broken for my hurt
First place
Healer of my wounds
Lover of my soul
First place

How can I deny a love so deep and wide?
How can I refuse Your love?
How can I deny a love so deep and wide?
How can I refuse Your love?

Your grace
That’s what I received
Long before I heard
Long before I knew
Your grace
Poured out over me
Mercy over me
Your grace!

How can I deny a love so deep and wide?
How can I refuse Your love?
How can I deny a love so deep and wide?
How can I refuse Your love?

First place
That’s what You deserve
You’re the one I love
You’re the one I’ll serve
First place
Ruler of my heart
Master of my life

First place!

You Rescued Me - video demo & lead sheet

You Rescued Me (lead sheet)

Thank You, Lord, for Your desire to rescue and redeem us!

1. Thank You for Your kindness
Thank You for forgiveness
Thank You for salvation, You rescued me
Thank You for Your patience
Thank You for Your mercy
Thank You for salvation, You rescued me.

Bound in chains, deepest gloom, That dark, solitary room
Locked in a prison house of sin, ‘Til your mighty love broke in.
From my pain, From my fears, from the shame of wasted years
Now I’m free, free to stand, I surrender to Your plan.

2. Thank You for Your beauty
Thank You for Your favor
Thank You for salvation, You rescued me
Thank You for Your tough love
Thank You for persisting
Thank You for salvation, You rescued me.

Bound in chains, deepest gloom, That dark, solitary room
Locked in a prison house of sin, ‘Til your mighty love broke in.
From my pain, From my fears, from the shame of wasted years
Now I’m free, free to stand, I surrender to Your plan.

3. Thank You for Your promise
Thank You for Your healing

The verses of this song have been kicking around in my head for a long time.
Finally able to add a verse and finish it this morning.

and rescues us, again and again.

Look for a lead sheet and demo video soon. Thanks!

Footprints (Rob Atkins)

tune: Londonderry Air (O Danny Boy)
Rob is a new friend from Wales, a pastor, songwriter and musician.
Thanks Rob!

Upon the shore I walked with him at even
And I looked back upon the path we'd trod
And in the sand I traced our way at even
And I was glad I'd walked through life with God,
For side by side we'd journeyed through together
All through the world's wide wilderness of care
And side by side we'd journeyed through to even:
Safe at his side the Lord my God had brought me here.

But in my joy I caught a strain of sadness
To give me pause when thinking of my way
For on the shore I saw he'd left me lonely
When I had most the need of him to stay:
When I was tried he'd left me worn and wandering,
He'd left me lone when I was fighting fears,
He'd let me tread the steepest slopes in solitude
Before he came back to my side to dry my tears.

But then the Lord drew near to me in comfort
And in his tenderness he made it plain
That in the times when dread and darkness threatened
He was my shield and shelter from the pain:
For on his shoulders he was gently bearing
And on his shoulders I from harm was free:
The single trace of footprints of the master,
The single trace of footprints shows he carried me.

So on the shore I walk with him at even:
I face the latter days of life secure,
For if my pilgrimage reserves me sorrow
The footprints show that he is strong and sure:
If I am near the gates if heaven weary,
No longer strong enough to stride alone,
The footprints show that he is there to carry me,
The footprints show the Lord my God will bear me home.

The Solid Rock (new tune)

(Edward Mote / Gary Hicks)
Lead Sheet (pdf) available on request.

Where do you find your hope?

1. My hope is built on nothing less
Than Jesus’ blood and righteousness
I dare not trust the sweetest frame
But wholly lean on Jesus’ name.

2. When darkness veils His lovely face
I rest on His unchanging grace
In every high and stormy gale
My anchor holds within the veil

3. His oath, His covenant, His blood
Support me in o’er whelming floods
When all about my soul gives way
He then is all my hope and stay.

4. When He shall come with trumpet sound,
Oh, may I then in Him be found
Dressed in His righteousness alone
Faultless to stand before the throne.

ON CHRIST THE SOLID ROCK I STAND
MY LIFE, MY HOPE IS IN HIS HANDS
ON CHRIST THE SOLID ROCK I STAND
ALL OTHER GROUND IS SINKING SAND.

Beaubassin Take Deux

Let's take another stab at a remake
of the old folk song AURA LEE.
Imagine it as an uptempo bluegrass number,
with a tempo of 90 beats per minute.
With this second revision of the lyrics,
it should now be usable as a new Canadian folk song.
Beaubassin was an Acadian community
on the Isthmus of Chignecto,
in present-day Nova Scotia.

BEAUBASSIN

Hear the distant whistle blow, See the morning dew
Though my home is far away, here I am with you.
Gannets linger near the shore, will they fly away?
Here we are at Beaubassin, shall we greet the day?

When my heart is sad and blue, burdened and distressed
Then I hear your loving words, and I am at rest
Speak again, speak, my love, as in olden days
Cheer my fainting, weary soul, fill my lips with praise.

Hear the distant whistle blow, See the sun go down
We are still at Beaubassin, sleepy little town
Day is done, day is done, supper time is through
Though my home is far away, I am here with you.

words by Gary Hicks
to the tune “Aura Lee” by George Poulton (nineteenth century)

Free! "For the Storehouse" Available in Hymn Sheet

The new hymn “For the Storehouse of Your Mercy” is now available in hymn sheet with chords.

I consider this new hymn to be among the best I have written.

For the storehouse of Your mercy, for Your persevering grace,
From my heart I speak thanksgiving, From my lips I offer praise.
Was there ever deeper goodness than is offered from above?
Such an endless stream of kindness, such a reservoir of love!

I was blind to heaven’s mercy til the day I spoke Your name;
Full of fears and fond delusions, full of deadening guilt and shame.
Then Your mercy sought and found me, holy kindness drew me in,
And Your grace roared like the ocean, overwhelming all my sin.

Down from heaven, out from Calvary, still it flows to save and heal:
To the nations, for each person, there is mercy rich and real.
The transforming grace of Jesus, who is mighty still to save,
Floods the earth and fills the heavens, kills despair and robs the grave.

When the earth at last shall perish, and the heavens burn away,
Then in worlds yet uncreated we will thrive in endless day.
And the mercy of our Saviour, shining then more brightly still,
We will celebrate forever, on New Zion’s holy hill.

Set to the American folk tune “Beach Spring”, we have used this hymn on several occasions at church, led by the Praise Band. It will be sung next Sunday in our traditional service by one of our choirs.

You can receive a PDF copy via email, free upon request.

A chord sheet and lyric sheet are also available at no charge.

Though the night is long

Psalm 6 (Rebuke Me Not In Anger)

After the funeral of a close friend last weekend, grief overwhelmed me yesterday. This morning I rediscovered this hymn from 2010, based on Psalm 6. It comforts me to sing it. Thank You, Lord, for Your mercy in this time of loss.

words: Gary Hicks (8/29/10) altered
tune: “St. Christopher” by Frederick Maker, 1881
(“Beneath the Cross of Jesus”)

Rebuke me not in anger, have mercy on my soul
My grief is deep and hard to bear, and I am swallowed whole
Lord, heal me, for my bones are vexed, my bed is wet with tears
My eyes are faint, my soul is weak, my mind is filled with fears.

Return, O God, and free me, deliver me again
Come save me for Your mercies’ sake and heal me from my sin
I cannot thank You from the grave or serve You when I’m gone
But may this day, each waking hour, bring praise to You alone.

How long, O Lord, forever? At last you see my grief
You hear my voice of weeping and You offer sweet relief
And all my foes turn back in shame, they run to disappear
O bless the Lord! O magnify! My God is present here!
